Course Content

Throughout the programme you will undertake the following mandatory units:

Teaching my subject
This unit is designed to ensure you have a good understanding of the subject you will be teaching. It encourages you to reflect on your subject, particularly what you found easy or challenging to learn, and how you overcame the challenges, leading onto a consideration of curriculum sequencing.

Learners and Learning
This unit explores the breadth of Further Education (FE) learners and how they arrived in FE. It encourages you to start thinking about the type of learner you may be teaching, their motivators, their learning and learner needs, and what impacts on their learning.

Teachers and Teaching
Understand what it is to be a teacher in the FES sector. This unit considers the teacher’s role, the characteristics of a good teacher, how to work and learn from others and the support available to teachers. The unit further considers teaching, in terms of curriculum development, planning and delivering learning, developing resources, assessment and feedback, types of delivery and meeting the needs of all learners through relationship building.

This unit is designed to ensure you are able to demonstrate your professionalism in applying your knowledge and understanding in a range of educational environments. It includes practical elements in terms of planning, delivering and assessing, being professional in terms of own responsibilities as a practitioner, whilst meeting the requirements of the sector.

Effective digital and online pedagogies
This unit considers educational technology as a means of supporting/enabling your professional practice. In addition, it will provide the background, context, and theory underpinning your ability to demonstrate occupational competence.

Action research
During this unit you will carry out research via a development project agreed between yourself and the placement organisation. The area of research should provide the opportunity for you to employ a range of research and investigative skills appropriate to your professional activities and circumstances and at the same time, benefit the placement organisation.

You must agree an area of research within your organisation, demonstrate effective complex research and investigative skills, choose and apply an appropriate research methodology, methods, and techniques, and then critically evaluate the resulting research outcome. You should share your study and its findings with interested parties within your organisation. Throughout the duration of the research project, you will evidence the following:
