Leadership & Management Case Study – Sami Cooper
I am a project manager, working mainly in web-development and wanted to move into line management. My boss recommended that I address some skill gaps by taking the Team Leader/Supervisor Level 3 Apprenticeship. The enrolment process was straight forward and I didn’t have to wait very long to start.
The online classes were interesting and the other students were all professionals looking to progress in their careers like myself. The 6 “off-the-job guided learning hours” were very manageable, being filled with reading and coursework. You have to keep a log of hours spent studying, but the online system is easy enough to grasp. Make sure you that you do actually study a couple of evenings a week, otherwise I feel it would be a challenge to make up these hours later!
The course content was in depth enough for even seasoned managers, who are looking to understand some management theory, but not particularly challenging, even for a novice like me. My lecturers were easy to get along with, having professional discussions rather than the typical ‘teacher-to-student’ scenario, which was nice for someone who hadn’t been in a class for many years.
The information around each coursework was very well structured, meaning you just have to follow along each assessment requirement bullet-point to ensure a pass. It can be challenging to provide examples for the specific case-study scenarios at the time that they are needed, but as long as you have an accommodating manager who can work with you to provide the opportunities, you should be fine.
Overall, the course struck a great balance between being manageable alongside my work and personal commitments, while still offering valuable insights and practical skills. It was an enjoyable experience, and I feel much more confident in my ability to take on a line management role.
