The Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) has recently announced its new Level 4 Diploma for Professional Accounting Technicians (L4PAT) qualification, built directly around the realities of modern finance roles rather than a textbook version of the profession.

If you are a current level 4 AAT student, or are planning on undertaking it in the future, keep reading as we will explore what this means for you.

Current Level 4 (L4PAT ) students
If you are currently studying AAT level 4 with us, we will discuss your options with you on an individual basis. You can continue the current level 4 Q22 qualification and have until the end of July 2028 to complete it, or it may be possible to transfer to the new L4PAT qualification from 1 September. Please note the current level 4 AAT qualification you are studying is not any less valuable just because there is a new one.

New Level 4 students
Any new level 4 AAT students starting after 1 September, will be registered for the new L4PAT qualification. If you start before September, you will be registered for the current Q22 qualification and have the option to continue on that, or transfer to the new one in September.

What has changed with the new L4PAT qualification?
There are now five compulsory units and no longer any optional ones. The new units are:

  • FNAC – Financial Accounting
  • MNAC – Management Accounting
  • ATIC – Audit and Internal Controls
  • PTAX – Principles of Taxation
  • AVBA – Advanced Business Awareness (a new unit)

The new Advanced Business Awareness (AVBA) unit enhances commercial understanding and provides greater insight into the wider business environment.

All units will feature computer-marked assessments; helping to speed up marking and support faster learner progression.
