Teaching Isn’t Just for Classrooms: 6 Places You Can Use Your Teaching Skills

Posted: 4 August 2025 at 11:38 am | Author: CAW Business School

When people think of teaching, they often imagine a school classroom, rows of desks, and a whiteboard at the front. In reality, teaching happens everywhere – in workplaces, community halls, online platforms, and even around the kitchen table.

If you’ve ever helped someone learn something new, you’ve already started teaching. If you enjoy it, there are more opportunities out there than you might think to start a teaching career, as well as complete formal teaching qualifications to support your journey:

1. In the workplace

Many people are asked to train new starters, lead short workshops, or pass on knowledge to colleagues. This kind of informal teaching experience is incredibly valuable and increasingly recognised. If you’re the “go-to” person in your team, developing your teaching skills could open doors to completing teaching qualifications or pursuing formal training roles.

2. In your community

Local venues often welcome people with skills to share. Whether it’s teaching crafts, running wellbeing sessions, or offering basic IT help, community learning is a brilliant way to connect with others and give something back. It’s also a great place to start if you’re testing a new idea or building confidence in your teaching abilities before moving onto formal teacher training.

3. Online teaching

The internet has transformed how we teach and learn. You can now create video tutorials, run Zoom workshops, or build full courses on platforms like Udemy or Skillshare. If you’re comfortable on camera or want to reach a wider audience, online teaching is flexible, scalable, and full of creative possibilities.

4. With charities or support groups

Many organisations rely on volunteers or freelance educators to help people build life or employment skills. You might teach budgeting, communication, digital skills or something more specialist. Completing a formal teaching course can build your confidence in these kinds of positions, however, these roles often value real-world teaching experience and passion over traditional teacher training.

5. As a freelancer or side business

If you already work for yourself (for example as a personal trainer, therapist, creative, or consultant), offering workshops or training could be a valuable addition to your services. Teaching allows you to repurpose your knowledge in new ways, reach a wider audience, and add extra income streams.

6. In adult education or further education settings

For those looking to move into formal education, adult learning centres and colleges often welcome subject experts. What’s more – you don’t necessarily need a full teaching degree to get started – an introductory teaching qualification like the City & Guilds Level 3 Award in Education and Training is often enough to get a foot in the door teaching part-time or on vocational courses.

Whatever your background, teaching is about connection. If you’ve got experience, insight, or enthusiasm to share, there’s almost certainly a space where your voice is needed.
