Introduction

If you are currently working in a supervisory/middle managerial role and are looking to progress to a senior management role then this could be the course for you!

You will undertake a range of units which are aimed at developing strategic leadership and management skills. For example ‘Assessing Your Own Leadership Capability’ explores effective leadership styles and motivation techniques used to achieve your organisation’s values and goals.

By undertaking this qualification you will develop your ability to lead and inspire, raise your profile in your organisation, and improve the efficiency of your business by creating an effective and motivated team.

Membership of the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM)

As a student on this programme you will receive free studying membership with the ILM which will give you access to a range of invaluable tools and resources. Studying memberships lasts for the length of your programme or a minimum of six months.

Course content

You will need to achieve 37 credits. This involves completion of the following units:

  • Managing for efficiency and effectiveness
  • Developing and leading teams to achieve organisational goals and objectives
  • Assessing your own leadership capability and performance
  • Manage stress and conflict in the organisation
  • Managing recruitment
  • Managing customer relations
  • Delegating authority in the workplace
  • Solving problems by making effective decisions in the workplace

Attendance

Your learning will be a combination of online material and tutorials augmented by case studies, self directed research and a number of taught sessions in the form of study days held at our Huntingdon centre. You may start this programme in January, March, June or September each year. This method of learning allows for personalised, flexible study and the opportunity to work with your tutor and share experiences and ideas with fellow students.

Study days

YYou will attend eight study days throughout your programme. Attendance is mandatory to meet the awarding body’s guided learning requirements.

20 September 2014 – Managing for efficiency and effectiveness
21 September 2014 – Managing customer relations

22 November 2014 – Theories and principles of leadership / motivating people
23 November 2014 – Developing and leading teams to achieve organisational goals

21 March 2015 – Solving problems by making effective decisions
22 March 2015 – Management communication and effective delegation

13 June 2015 – Managing conflict and stress in the workplace
14 June 2015 – Successful recruitment and selection of staff

Duration

18 Months.

Location

You may be located anywhere in the UK or overseas. Please note that all taught sessions are held at our Huntingdon centre, Cambridgeshire.

Huntingdon is approximately a 30 minute drive from Peterborough, Bedford, Cambridge and Northamptonshire.

Assessment

You will be assessed by an ILM written assignment for each unit, written questions, reflective reviews and learning logs.

Progression and career opportunities

This professionally recognised qualification will provide you with solid leadership and managerial skills, allowing you to contribute to management decisions and confidently lead other staff members.

Post nominals

This is a well respected and nationally recognised qualification. It will be a professional addition to your CV and stand you in good stead when applying for managerial or supervisory positions. Upon completion of the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management qualification, depending on your management experience you will become a Member (MInstLM) or Fellow Member (FInstLM) of the ILM.
