Key Facts

  • Attendance: Online with remote support from dedicated personal tutor
  • Duration: 18 months (a minimum of six hours per week must be spent undertaking off-the-job training).
  • Next start dates: This apprenticeship can be started at any time.
  • Location: Virtual delivery, no physical college attendance is required.

Entry Requirements

The apprentice must be living and working in England in a suitable role and cannot already hold a level 4 (or above) qualification in a similar subject.

For the apprenticeship to be completed within 18 months the apprentice must be working a minimum of 30 hours per week. If they are employed for fewer hours then the length of their apprenticeship will be proportionately extended.

The apprentice should have a good standard of Maths and English. Students who don't already hold certificates evidencing English and Maths at level 2 or equivalent will need to complete Functional Skills.

Course Content

This apprenticeship consists of the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to develop the mentoring skills needed to support others in their training and development.

Knowledge

The knowledge gained will provide the opportunity to improve both mentoring skills and the understanding of how to support others to develop themselves in an organisational context:

  • Roles and responsibilities of a mentor
  • Professional boundaries, ethical requirements
  • Manage a mentoring contract
  • Mentoring theories and models
  • Building mentoring relationships
  • Communication
  • Listening skills and techniques
  • Giving advice and points of referral
  • Theories and models of reflection
  • Giving feedback

Skills and Behaviours

Transferrable skills and behaviours will be gained to provide the confidence for the knowledge to be applied:

  • Carrying out mentoring activities
  • Keeping appropriate records
  • Putting all aspects within the knowledge section in to practice during mentoring activities
  • Demonstrating respect and resilience throughout role

Assessment

An End Point Assessment will be required to achieve the apprenticeship. This consists of the following:

Observation - with questions and answers

Professional Discussion - supported by a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate learned knowledge, skills and behaviours

Portfolio of Evidence - your personal tutor will help you identify suitable evidence to include

Unless exempt Level 2 Functional Skills are assessed via online examinations and practical assessments.

Course Fees

Apprenticeship fees are payable by you as the employer.

Prior to commencing the course an invoice will be issued for the total course fee.

As an employer you will either be an Apprenticeship Levy Payer (employers with over a £3 million pay bill) or Non-Levy Payers (employers with less than a £3 million pay bill).

Course fees for Apprenticeship Levy Payers

Levy payers in England will pay the full apprenticeship amount of £5,000 using their digital account.

 Course fees for Non-Levy Payers

Non-levy paying employers in England are required to contribute 5% (£250 in one payment) towards the cost of the apprenticeship provided they use their digital account to process the claim for 95% funding available.

Fees are fully inclusive of End Point Assessment (EPA) fees, however, if a student needs to re-sit an exam, re-sit fees will be payable.

What Next?

On completion of this qualification your team member will be able to confidently support other team members to develop themselves through training and development.

Following this qualification many employers choose to continue supporting their staff and develop them further such as by supporting them to undertake a related qualification such as the Level 5 Coaching Professional Apprenticeship, the Operations/Departmental Manager Level 5 Apprenticeship or the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management.
